Flax in the Health and Fiber Industry

We already know the many benefits of flax seeds may it be whole flaxseed or milled flax seed. With the right consumption of flax seeds according to some studies can benefit individuals with certain types of breast and prostate cancers. Aside from that, flax may also lessen the severity of diabetes by stabilizing blood-sugar levels.

Flax seed are the best natural source of Omega-3 ALA, Omega-3s and Omega-6s in an optimal 3:1 balance. Flax seed is a good source of dietary fiber, protein and lignans, Convenient to use and add to some daily foods like breads.

But aside from that flax seeds are also important in the Fiber industry due to its high fiber content. Here some of the things I have learned about the flax fibers.

- Currently most flax produced in the USA and Canada are seed flax types for the production of linseed oil or flaxseeds for human nutrition.

- Flax fiber is extracted from the bast or skin of the stem of the flax plant.

- Flax fiber is soft, lustrous and flexible.

- It is stronger than cotton fiber but less elastic.

- The best grades are used for linen fabrics such as damasks, lace and sheeting.

- Coarser grades are used for the manufacturing of twine and rope.

- Flax fiber is also a raw material for the high-quality paper industry for the use of printed banknotes and rolling paper for cigarettes.
